Nitzanim Classes for children of all ages
Cheder Nitzanim
Cheder Nitzanim started in October 2007 and currently has around 12 children aged about 2 to 12. We meet in the synagogue every Sunday during term time from 10am to 12 noon, and sessions are structured but relatively informal. We cater for families from a variety of backgrounds. There is no upper or lower age limit, and parents (or grandparents!) are encouraged to stay for all or part of the sessions. No prior knowledge is assumed, and children are welcome to start at any time during the term or year.
The children start and finish every session together, but occasionally split into two groups, Aleph (up to 8) and Bet (8 and over), to allow for activities which more closely suit the various age groups. We learn to read Hebrew using a modified version of the Jolly Phonics system, and use role play to develop basic conversational Hebrew. The Bet group are also concentrating on learning to write block Hebrew.
We use songs, games, discussion, cooking and crafts to explore Jewish religion, culture and ethics. We celebrate the festivals with the rest of the community, and at least once every term the children plan and lead their own service. The Bet group also has the option of working on longer projects if they wish to.
The cost is £2 per child per session to cover materials, payable at the beginning of term. For more information, or to arrange to come and try us out for a week or two, contact Emma at
